2005年,顏蘭權和莊益增導演來到臺南後壁的菁寮拍攝紀錄片《無米樂》。影片用單純的影像語言紀錄著末代稻農的勞動身影與樂天知命的人生觀。因著那樣純粹的敬天畏地的精神太動人,使得菁寮聚落成了著名的觀光景點,而影片中的崑濱伯、煌明伯與文林伯也一夕之間成了最樸質卻耀眼的老明星。
菁寮聚落是由菁寮、墨林與後廍三個村子所組成,住在菁寮的崑濱伯依舊日出而作、日落而息的眷顧著他的稻田、住在墨林的煌明伯2年前離世了,他弓著身、駝著背彈棉被的身影成了菁寮最讓人想念的風景。而住在後廍的文林伯可以說是最活耀的老農明星了。
因著菁寮老街上常常不定期的舉辦嫁妝一牛車的體驗劇碼,因而文林伯與他的水牛總是擁有展演的舞台。《無米樂》片中那頭在水田裡玩泥巴的水牛在幾年前生病過世了,印象中文林伯難過了好一陣子之後,又到花蓮帶了現在這頭水牛回來照顧,文林伯告訴我他這輩子養過的牛有十幾頭了,每一隻跟他都有很好的感情。
黃昏時刻,我陪著文林伯與水牛閒坐在牛舍前聊天,天色越來越暗,趕在入夜前出來飽餐一頓的蚊子在我們身旁嗡嗡飛舞著,文林伯於是緩緩地起身,撿拾了些稻草捲成火把,很快的點燃空地上堆置的木材堆,用小火悶燒著木材產生濃煙來幫水牛薰趕蚊子。說也奇怪,我見那白煙如此濃烈,原以為水牛會怕,可是你從他的眼神當中,卻明白的感受到牠有種欣慰的感覺。薰完了蚊子之後,文林伯帶著牛去喝水,然後讓牠再吃一點飼料與乾稻草,於是終於像是完成了甚麼重要的事情似的很安心地把它牽回牛舍,準備迎接夜晚的來臨。我一直深深相信著人跟動物之間存在著某種可以彼此互動的頻率,可以彼此了解對方的想法、提供對方的需求、進而互相協助照顧,像個好朋友一般。我想我在文林伯與水牛之間看到這種無法言喻的動人情感。

In 2005, Director Yen Lan-Chuan and Director Chuang I-Tseng came to Jingliao, Houbi in Tainan to shoot the documentary Let It Be. The film records the hard work and optimism of the last-generation rice farmers in a pure and simple way. The genuine respect for nature shown in the film made the Jingliao settlement a famous tourist attraction. Farmer Kunbin, Farmer Huangming, and Farmer Wenlin became the humblest yet dazzling stars.
The Jingliao settlement consists of three villages: Jingliao, Molin, and Houbu. Farmer Kunbin, who lives in Jingliao, still gets up to work at sunrise and stops working at sunset. Farmer Huangming, who lived in Molin, passed away two years ago. The scene of him bending his back to fluff the quilts has become a lingering memory in Jingliao. Farmer Wenlin, who lives in Houbi, is perhaps the most active superstar farmer.
In Jingliao old street, they occasionally hold the event Cart Filled with Dowry, so Farmer Wenlin always has a stage to perform together with his water buffalo. The water buffalo that played with mud in the rice field in Let It Be passed away from illness several years ago. I remember Farmer Wenlin had been upset for quite a while until he brought home from Hualian another water buffalo which he has now. Farmer Wenlin told me that he has owned more than a dozen water buffalos in his life. Each one of them shared a strong bond with him.
At dusk, I chatted with Farmer Wenlin in front of the stable along with his water buffalo. As the sky grew darker and darker, the mosquitos came out to feast before nightfall and made buzzing sounds around our ears. Standing up slowly, Farmer Wenlin collected pieces of straw and rolled them into torches. He then quickly ignited the wood pile on the ground. The smoke coming from the smoldering wood is intended to repel the mosquitos for his water buffalo. It might sound strange, but as I speculated that his water buffalo would be scared by the strong smoke, instead its eyes showed the relief. After the mosquitos were gone, Farmer Wenlin guided his water buffalo to drink water. Then, he offered it some feed and dry straw. Finally, right before the night completely arrived, he took his water buffalo back to the stable like he was doing something ceremonious.
I have always had this belief that there is a connection between people and animals that allows for such cross-species interaction. Human understand animals and vice versa; we know the needs from another. Therefore, we help and care for one another, like best friends ever. I think I saw this indescribable touching affection between Farmer Wenlin and his water buffalo.

人と動物の間には、ある種の互いに作用する波長があって、互いの考えを理解したり、ニーズに応えることができ、相互協力によって親友のような存在になれると思う。文林伯と水牛の間には、このような言葉では言い表せない感情が見て取れた。
